University Charter School (UCS) in Sumter County, Alabama, were initially unsure about implementing Global Nomads Group\u2019s Student to World program.<\/p>\n<p>Middle school math teacher Rochelle Tolliver was the school\u2019s first facilitator. \u201cWe were hesitant because we thought it was adding more to our already full plate. Once we saw how organized the program was and what a win-win it was for us, we immediately embraced it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>UCS subscribes to a \u201cplace-based learning\u201d model, focused on engaging students in their community, including their physical environment, local culture, history, and people. Students take what they learn in the classroom and apply it to the world they live in.<\/p>\n<p>UCS\u2019s Student to World program began as a pilot in the fall of 2021, with one middle school class incorporating the program one day a week. The program was so successful that the three other middle school teachers asked to join in as well. By the end of the year, every UCS middle-school class had completed the program.<\/p>\n<p>It turns out the Student to World program fits perfectly with their place-based model. Tolliver says, \u201cWe look at things on a global level and then try to make that same impact here at home, which is exactly how Student to World is structured.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elizabeth Reed, Place-Based Education Advisor at UCS, was an early champion of the program. \u201cWhen I learned about it, I got all fired up,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>UCS is located in a rural part of Alabama, which, Reed says, can limit students\u2019 exposure to the wider world. \u201cWe were trying our hardest to cultivate these real-world experiences for the students,\u201d Reed says, \u201cbut it was proving very difficult. The Student to World program is the easiest way to get their voices out and to connect them with someone else from a different population, from a different culture, on the other side of the globe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"body-container-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"body-container container-fluid\">\n<div class=\"row-fluid-wrapper row-depth-1 row-number-4\">\n<div class=\"row-fluid\">\n<div class=\"span12 widget-span widget-type-cell page-center content-wrapper padding60tb\" data-widget-type=\"cell\" data-x=\"0\" data-w=\"12\">\n<div class=\"row-fluid-wrapper row-depth-1 row-number-5\">\n<div class=\"row-fluid\">\n<div class=\"span12 widget-span widget-type-cell main-content\" data-widget-type=\"cell\" data-x=\"0\" data-w=\"12\">\n<div class=\"row-fluid-wrapper row-depth-1 row-number-6\">\n<div class=\"row-fluid\">\n<div class=\"span12 widget-span widget-type-widget_container\" data-widget-type=\"widget_container\" data-x=\"0\" data-w=\"12\">\n<div id=\"hs_cos_wrapper_widget_72564023642\" class=\"hs_cos_wrapper hs_cos_wrapper_widget hs_cos_wrapper_type_module\" data-hs-cos-general-type=\"widget\" data-hs-cos-type=\"module\">\n<p>Student to World doesn\u2019t just act as a window to the world, but as a mirror. \u201cWe have a pocket of multicultural students at UCS,\u201d Reed says. \u201cFor them to see people like themselves in some of those videos, to see themselves in other students involved in the same topics, was very encouraging for them. They don\u2019t often have those connections here other than family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The impact of implementing Student to World in classrooms is reverberating throughout the school community. \u201cI discovered that the kids now relate what they\u2019re learning in other classes to the real-world,\u201d Tolliver says. \u201cIn our morning meetings, we now pose questions that relate to the real world, just like the program does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A student advisory committee independently created a project called \u201cI\u2019m a Rural Student\u201d, where they submitted their perspectives on what it\u2019s like being a rural student in Sumter County. They might think they\u2019re less of a person, but I really want to prove throughout our community that that is not true whatsoever,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>He and his fellow students are taking the lessons to heart. \u201cIt\u2019s really something that all kids should learn.
