Please join GNG, Ethan Zohn, co-founder of Grassroot Soccer (and winner of "Survivor: Africa" in 2001) and students from Nairobi High School in a compelling conversation in real time about how we can raise awareness about HIV/AIDS in order to tackle the pandemic together! Zohn is currently on a "Dribble 2008" 550-mile trek, dribbling a soccer ball from Boston all the way to Washington DC. In honor of World AIDS Day on December 1st, he hopes to bring the urgency of the AIDS crisis home to North American youth so that the next generation may become HIV-negative.
Organizations such as Grassroot Soccer Inc. (GRS) are joining the fight in Africa. GRS, a 501(c)(3) organization, uses the "power of soccer" in the fight against HIV/AIDS, focusing on youth in the areas of the world most devastated by the disease. By the FIFA World Cup in South Africa in 2010, the organization intends to graduate 1 million African youths from its program.
As the HIV/AIDS epidemic continues to spread across many parts of the world - and sub-Saharan Africa in particular - many young people feel helpless as to how they can help combat this deadly disease which has been coined a "threat to U.S. national security" (Colin Powell) and has already claimed the lives of millions. AIDS has left no corner of the world untouched. In fact, nearly 30% of North American youth that have HIV have been undiagnosed and are unaware that they have contracted the illness (Centers for Disease Control, 2008). For more information on how the Global Nomads Group (GNG) has addressed HIV/AIDS in the past, please see this link for more information and resources: http://www.gng.org/currents/teachers/hiv101/.
